A guide for adding content to this website

To invite someone as a Contributor:

- instead of going Website > Pages, click Settings near the bottom left, then Permissions & Ownership, then Invite Contributor

To add a new article:

Before you begin, you’ll need to have ready

  • an image for your article

  • the headline for your article

  • the text in a format you can copy-and-paste from

  • a 10-25 word ‘excerpt’ of the article

  • a browser window opened in ‘incognito mode’ showing the RTSGNSW website

About images

Images will be displayed large on your article page, and small as a ‘thumbnail’ image on pages that group articles together.

The ideal size for an image is 1200 px wide by 900px high – but, in a pinch, a smaller size in the same ratio (e.g. 1000 x 750 or 800 x 600) is ok.

Selecting the best image

In most cases, it’s not appropriate to use a photograph of a particular victim or survivor unless it’s an article that names them or quotes them. For general articles, it’s better to use a free image from one of the sites listed above.

Because of our subject matter, it’s more sensitive if we choose images that don’t reveal the identity of the people in them. Try the following techniques:

  • close-ups that show only portions of the face, such as one side, or the lower half

  • figures silhouetted against a window or the sun

  • figures with their backs turned to us

  • hands, which can be just as expressive as faces

  • objects that symbolise the subject. For example: to illustrate the topic of children and grief, a shot of a teddy bear is better than a shot of a crying child.

Let’s create a new Support article as an example.

  1. In Squarespace, go Website > Pages > down to the ‘Not Linked’ section > Support Collection > Blog Content

  2. Duplicate the article at the top of the list by clicking on it to reveal the three horizontal dots > Duplicate

  3. Click Edit in the top left. You might be surprised to see that there are two identical headlines. Paste your new headline into both.

  4. Copy the text of your article, highlight the existing text in Squarespace and paste (alt-V).

  5. Style the text by deleting any extra spaces between paragraphs and formatting any subheadings with ‘Heading 3’ style

  6. Next, change the image by double-clicking it.

  7. Save and exit.

  8. Find the three horizontal dots again and choose Settings > Content. Change the image, and add your Excerpt.

  9. Change the post URL: select the text after the final forward-slash and choose a new key word from your article’s name

  10. Next, under Settings > Options > Status, change ‘Draft’ to ‘Published’. Choosing today’s date will put this article as the first in the list; if you’d like it to appear later, note the dates of the other articles and choose a new date accordingly.

  11. Next, under Settings > Options > Categories, click in ‘Add categories here’ and hit your space bar to see what options you have for filing the article under an existing category.

  12. Preview your new article in the browser window showing the RTSGNSW site and make any adjustments if necessary

If all else fails, use Google.

Squarespace has a huge online following. Searching for “How do I <insert task here> in Squarespace 7.1?” will more than likely bring up a YouTube video that will show you exactly what you need.

  • a 10-25 word ‘excerpt’ of the text above

  • a browser window opened in ‘incognito mode’ showing the RTSGNSW website

  • the ‘thumbnail’ for the video. Here’s how to get it:

  1. Back in Squarespace, go Pages > Media Room > Blog Content

  2. Duplicate the video at the top of the list by clicking on it to reveal the three horizontal dots > Duplicate

  3. Click Edit in the top left. You might be surprised to see that there are two identical headlines. Paste your new headline into both.

  4. Copy the text of your article, highlight the existing text in Squarespace and paste (alt-V).

  10. Still under Settings > Content, paste the video URL into ‘Source URL’

  11. Next, under Settings > Options > Status, change ‘Draft’ to ‘Published’. Choosing today’s date will put this article as the first in the list; if you’d like it to appear later, note the dates of the other articles and choose a new date accordingly.
